- CHAPTER 16 TESTING AND FIXING A FOLDER
-
-
- INTRODUCTION THE FOLDER FIX...
-
- As a genealogical information manager, GIM has a lot of
- relationships to keep track of: parents and children within
- families, multiple marriages, source and research notes and
- all the rest. For the most part, GIM does a good job of
- keeping track of all of these relationships.
-
- The purpose of the folder check (described in Chapter 3) is to
- double check the integrity of these relationships. If the
- folder check runs without reporting any errors, then your
- folder is clean.
-
- However, for one reason or another, you may find that an error
- or two has crept into your folder -- that is, you may find
- that the folder check reports an error or a warning in the
- folder. When this happens, the folder has become corrupted,
- and it is necessary to fix the folder.
-
- This chapter will explain how this is accomplished, including
- an overview of the Fix Folder function in the Utilities Area.
-
- SOURCES OF FOLDER CORRUPTION...
-
- When the folder check reports an error in your folder, that
- error can have been caused by any number of things. The most
- likely suspect is a software error in your copy GIM, and so
- you should report any such errors to the GIM Authors --
- especially if you can reproduce them consistently -- so that
- they can be corrected at once.
-
- Other less likely sources of folder corruption include hard
- disk failures. If you suspect such a thing, you should run
- CHKDSK (see your DOS manual for details); if there are any
- problems with your hard disk, then CHKDSK will report them,
- and CHKDSK /F will attempt to fix them. If CHKDSK reports a
- clean hard disk, then the problem is definitely with the GIM
- software.
-
- RESTORING BACKUPS...
-
- Your first remedy, if you encounter a folder check error, is
- to restore your folder backup and re-enter your data. Your
- folder backup is guaranteed to be a clean set of data. To do
- this, press control-F4 from the Folder Area.
-
- If you do this, and you re-enter your data, and the error
- persists, then it is definitely a repeatable software error,
- and we want to know about it.
-
- FIX FOLDER...
-
- Your second remedy is to run the Fix Folder function described
- below. This will attempt to fix several known and possible
- errors, but it doesn't fix them all. (When we find new things
- that Fix Folder needs to correct, we enhance its ability to
- identify and resolve folder errors, but some problems remain
- unidentified.)
-
- SEND US YOUR FOLDER...
-
- If all else fails, send us your folder, and we'll take care of
- it. We have some tools at our disposal to fix recalcitrant
- folders. Naturally, if you can send us some information about
- how your folder got into the state it's in, that would help us
- to prevent such things in the future. We'll be happy to fix
- your folder and send it back to you with a new copy of GIM,
- which will prevent any such errors in the future.
-
- PERFORMING FIX FOLDER...
-
- To run the Fix Folder function, use the following procedure:
-
- First, enter the Utilities Area by pressing F5 from the Multi
- Area.
-
- Next, press F4 to activate the Fix Folder function.
-
- The Fix Folder function will then proceed automatically to fix
- whatever folder errors it can.
-
- The result of a Fix Folder operation looks much like the
- folder check. The difference is that if it is successfully
- able to fix the folder errors, it WILL NOT report them as
- errors, but will instead proceed to silently fix them. If the
- Fix Folder function reports errors in your folder, that means
- that it is unable to fix that error, and you need to try one
- of the other two methods (described above) for resolved your
- folder errors.
